FIELD: Experiment with depth of field, motion, and exposure in real conditions. Practice shooting in different modes (shutter-priority, aperture-priority).
TUESDAY JULY 14TH
The Art of Photography
CLASSROOM: We’ll talk about what makes a good photograph / art. We’ll dive into the three components of good photography: Light, Composition, and Moment, and how these come together to tell a story.
FIELD: Shooting in full manual mode, we’ll experiment with photographing what catches your eye, exposing for the highlights, and getting more comfortable with your camera settings. We’ll also incorporate composition into our photographs.
WEDNESDAY JULY 15TH
TECHNIQUES AND POST-PROCESSING
CLASSROOM: We’ll spend time discussing different unique photography techniques that can be utilized to help tell a story or to problem-solve a scene. We’ll briefly discuss hardware, software, and data maintenance. We’ll show workflows from culling to editing a typical session.
FIELD: Practice photographing in manual mode and incorporating all 3 aspects to tell a story.
THURSDAY JULY 16TH
INTRODUCTION TO LIGHTING
CLASSROOM: We’ll talk about why lighting matters and how to do it, plus the physics behind it. We’ll review some of the gear out there and then go out and practice.
FIELD: We’ll take some lights into the field to practice.
friday JULY 17TH
STUDIO SESSION + CRITIQUE
CLASSROOM: We’ll learn about different lighting setups and have time to play with some creative lighting in a studio space. We’ll have a student critique of your work to close out the workshop.
WHAT TO BRING
- A DSLR or mirrorless camera + 1 lens, 1-2 batteries, 1-2 memory cards, at a minimum
- A sack lunch (you’ll have 1 hour off, so if you want to run to a restaurant, you might have time)
- A backpack/bag (we won’t be able to leave things in the library)
- A notebook + pen/pencil
- A willingness to learn and get creative!
That’s it. That’s all you actually have to have for the workshop. However, if you already have other gear you’re itching to use, feel free to bring it, as long as it fits in a backpack, as we will not be able to leave anything in the library during the afternoon field portion each day.
HOW TO PREPARE
The best way to prepare for the class is look up the user’s guide for your camera make and model. You don’t have to spend hours at this, and there are usually short videos on YouTube that get directly to the point. It will be helpful to have a general idea of how to maneuver around your camera menus before the class begins.
